Pica is described in the DSM-V as eating non-nutritive, non-food substances over a period of at least one month; it cannot be attributed to another eating disorder or a cultural phenomena and needs to have caused a significant disruption in the patient’s life. Pica is a widely misunderstood disorder that is still being debated today. A large part of why this disorder hasn’t been researched properly and thoroughly is because of the populations who are diagnosed most often: pregnant women, children, and neurodivergent people. The most popular representations of pica, such as shows like My Strange Addiction add to the stigma and misunderstanding of the disorder. (2022)
